RETREAT DESCRIPTION

The exploration of the elements through meditation and contemplation, internally (one’s own body) and externally, leads to understanding the body as non-self and impermanent. This practice also leads to seeing inter-dependence of all beings and supports balancing the mind. We will explore a number of these facets. This retreat is not for the timid. Participants must be comfortable with the discussion of the body in terms of anatomical parts as one of the modalities to contemplate the elements. We will use teachings from the Suttas, the Commentarial Tradition, and as inspired by monastics and others from Theravada traditions to contemplate the elements of Earth, Water, Fire, and Wind. (Space and Consciousness will also be touched on).

Metta Bhavana will be included to add joy, balance, and stability. The development of lovingkindness also furthers development of selflessness. Group metta chanting will be part of this practice.

The natural environment of Cloud Mountain will support cultivating the awareness of the direct experience of the elements internally and externally.

EXPERIENCE PREREQUISITE:  Daily silent sitting meditation practice for at least one year and  some familiarity with the Early Buddhists Texts (Pali Suttas). Recommended reading prior to this retreat MN 140: Exposition of the Elements; Dhātuvibhaṅgasutta and MN 62: The Greater Discourse of Advice to Rahula. The renunciation practice of staying offline and off phone/text during the entire course of the retreat is strongly encouraged. Please make arrangements in advance to support this.

Partial attendance is not offered on this retreat.
