David Sudar - Assisting Teacher

David Sudar has spent over three years on insight meditation retreats, including a 21-month retreat in Myanmar with his core teacher, Sayadaw U Tejaniya. During that period, he was also ordained as a Buddhist monk. Since 2018, he has been mentored by Vipassanā teacher Carol Wilson.

The core of his teaching revolves around the simple, relaxed awareness that is available in every moment of life. He helps meditators to find a home in that liberating awareness, bringing an attitude of ease, gentle curiosity, and a heartfelt sincerity. On a broader level, he is incredibly inspired by the Buddha’s Noble Eightfold Path, and teaches meditation as part of an integrated whole that points to both deep inner peace and being a wise & kind steward of this life.

His dharma journey began in 2004 with a book by the Dalai Lama, and his early years of practice included studies of Zen Buddhism, Ashtanga Yoga, and the Vipassanā retreats of S.N. Goenka. He felt the most resonance in the Theravāda Buddhist tradition, and has gone on to complete many retreats across Asia and the United States in the Burmese Vipassanā, Thai Forest, and Western Insight lineages. While he has been greatly impacted by many teachers within those lineages, a key lesson he has maintained from Sayadaw U Tejaniya is that with awareness, we see that every individual and every moment of life is offering us a teaching.

Based in Portland, Oregon, David lives with his wife, sister-in-law, and a dear dharma friend, and finds community living to be an integral part of his practice. He is the founder of the Path of Sincerity Sangha, and teaches actively both locally and online.
