RETREAT DESCRIPTION

Samatha is a Buddhist term that is often translated as “tranquility of the mind.” The Pali Canon describes it as one of two qualities of mind which is developed in Buddhist meditation, the other being vipassana (insight). When these two qualities are balanced, meditation can yield deeper results.

Over the course of this retreat we will practice and learn how to adjust and balance these two qualities in our meditation method in response to our present moment mental state for a more fruitful path of practice. Cultivating and abiding in tranquility can be a wonderful support during difficult times. The clear seeing that comes with practicing with tranquility can help us face the world with greater capacity and deeper insight.

This retreat will be held in noble silence and is open to beginning and experienced students. The retreat content will include:

  • Seated meditation practice and instruction on how to cultivate and balance
  • Samatha (tranquility)
  • Vipassana (clear seeing)
  • Instruction for practicing while standing, walking, laying down, and throughout daily life
  • Breathing exercises, guidance on meditation posture, and self-massage
  • Optional daily qi gong
